Plantclub x WunderTree: make Christmas sustainable with a living rental tree
December is right around the corner and we’re all in need of some festive cheer. You might be coming up with gift ideas (we hear plants go down well!) and dusting off the fairy lights already. Over at Plantclub, we’re teaming up with WunderTree to make Christmas more sustainable in homes and offices across Berlin.
Across Germany almost 30 million Christmas trees were sold last year. In Berlin alone 400,000 trees are cut down and used every Christmas—before being thrown in the trash. As consumers become more aware of the environmental impact of their buying choices, many are wondering how to have a sustainable Christmas.
WunderTree’s mission is to bring eco-friendly Christmas trees to Berlin’s homes and businesses. The startup rents living Christmas trees that are planted in a forest —forever—at the end of the holiday season. Rental includes delivery and pickup, as well as the cost of a second tree planted on your behalf. So for every fir returned to its forest home, WunderTree plants a native species to keep it company—and to support biodiversity. We all want to keep our plants alive (or at least try our best!), so why should a Christmas tree be any different?
How does it work?
With WunderTree, getting yourself a replantable Christmas tree couldn’t be easier. Simply sign up your company for our free employee plant store, then select one of WunderTree’s beautiful Nordmann Fir trees and add it to your basket. The sustainable trees are available in 3 sizes to suit any space: Bruni the Cutie (120-140cm), Rudolph (140-160cm), and Knut the King (160-180).
Your chosen tree is then delivered to your home or business, anywhere in Berlin or Potsdam. After enjoying a green Christmas, your tree is collected and transported to one of WunderTree’s planting locations in Brandenburg. Then (along with a native friend) your Christmas tree is planted out, forever—helping to create a diverse forest ecosystem.

What are the benefits?
Here’s why a replantable tree is the best choice for Christmas. Firstly, living fir trees smell incredible and look stunning for weeks. The trees come ready potted to avoid mess and are easy to care for. Unlike cut trees they won’t drop needles—so it’s safer for children and pets.
Another benefit is convenience. Choose your preferred time and have your potted Christmas tree delivered directly to your doorstep, no matter how many stairs. In January WunderTree will pick it up again—to spare you the hassle of dragging a tree in and out of your 5th floor apartment.
Finally, a replantable tree is the most sustainable option. Last year, 97% of WunderTrees survived Christmas to be planted out in the forest—the lives of cut trees end in January when they’re thrown in the bin (or on Berlin’s streets).
You might think an artificial Christmas tree has the lowest impact. But plastic trees have to be used for at least 10 years for the carbon cost to equal that of cut trees which end up being burned. A living WunderTree saves 14kg of CO2 in its first year, and continues to absorb carbon every year it lives on in the forest.
