Tall houseplants: how to make a statement

When it comes to choosing the best plants for a space, beginner plant owners may harbor some hesitation in bringing home tall indoor plants. Tall houseplants may give off the impression of more plant care to undertake but we’re here to tell you that’s not necessarily the case!

Standing plants or statement plants, can be a dynamic choice as plant interior design elements, adding accents or dimensions to a flatter or emptier plane. Large indoor plants can offer sprawling leaves, branches that reach upwards, and many other unique design possibilities. But how do you choose the right one for your space and level of plant knowledge?

In the Plantclub Plant Store, you can find a variety of big indoor plants to choose from, just scroll to our XL floor plant section; and here, we’ll cover the basics of how to style these plants and care for them in your space. So let’s dive right in and take you through our faves right now.

Beginner classics

Kentia Palm

This plant is perfect for the tropical plant lovers out there. With springy fronds and a playful energy, Kentia makes great accent pieces for spaces with natural materials. Pair a Kentia with some rattan or dark wood and you’ve got a match made in heaven. Kentia can be sensitive in certain lighting conditions as their leaves will burn in direct sunlight. But still, Kentia are beginner houseplants and will easily remain happy in bright indirect light.

Monstera

A classic for beginners! Monstera, otherwise known as the swiss cheese plant, is a common houseplant that usually sits on windowsills or desks. But did you know that in the wild monstera have the ability to grow up to 9 meters (or 30 feet) in height? Indoors, they’re more subdued but are still able to grow up to 4.5 meters (15 feet) tall and 2.5 meters (8 feet) wide. Like the others, monstera like bright indirect light and a good amount of humidity. Monstera can look great in any interior design layout and an extra large one can especially tie a whole space together.

Strelitzia

Strelitzia, also known as the wild banana plant for its leaves’ likeness to banana leaves, are great standing plants for the more experienced plant parent. Native to tropical climates, these tropical standouts love lots of sun and a decent amount of humidity. And a little plant fact for those familiar with Strelitzia: the tendency to split their upper leaves over time is actually meant to allow for wind to pass through and add more sun exposure to lower leaves!

Unique interiors

Philodendron Green Beauty

Another luscious choice for a sprawling plant that will fill a space: the charming philodendron Green Beauty. Deep green hues pair well with both light and dark spaces and the this Philodendron can be the perfect standout piece for either. Philodendrons also enjoy conditions of bright indirect light and prefer a bit of humidity. Another perfect large indoor houseplant for beginners.

Schefflera Amate

Also known as the umbrella tree for the growth pattern of its leaves, schefflera are one of those standing plants that will get your guests talking. While they can be a bit more to take on care-wise, the payout is worth it. Fast-growing and visually stunning, we couldn’t recommend this plant more.

Mediterranean

Olive tree

If you’re searching for outdoor trees that give off that “la dolce vita” vibe, look no further than the olive tree. Design-wise, their darker leaves and drier disposition fare well in minimalist spaces. Consider pairing an olive tree with a neutral color palette.

The Plant Store’s XL Olive tree comes pre-potted in an anthracite pot, great for balconies, patios, or gardens.
